Report on the year 2007-08
by Graeme Cook
(reprinted from The Inverleith News, Spring 2008)
?This year our society will enjoy its coral anniversary and I am sure you will all agree that the 35 years of hard work of members both past and present is something of which we can be proud. Although we continue to ‘encourage the preservation and improvement of the amenity of the Inverleith district of Edinburgh’, we cannot really claim to be doing quite as well as we have in the past. A recurring theme of recent AGMs has been that of our slowly dwindling membership and similarly reducing funds. Since 2000 we have seen a 12% reduction in membership, with a similar fall in revenues. While this newsletter is our largest expense, the committee feels it is a valuable chronicle of the area that is enjoyed by members and potential members alike. Despite the generous patronage of our sponsors (listed towards the back of this booklet) our coffers are left slightly lighter each time we publish. While the following pages detail some of the issues we have helped address over the past year, they do not by any means record all the activity of your committee. If you would like to see the society in action, the AGM is open to all, member or otherwise, and we always welcome new faces.
Neighbourhood Partnerships
During 2007 an important change to the distribution of council funds may have passed you by. Over the past few months Scottish councils, acting on Scottish Parliament orders, have introduced Neighbourhood Partnerships in order to ‘develop a more integrated and prioritised approach to service delivery at a local level alongside devolved decision making’. These partnerships can make recommendations and provide guidance and direction to the City Council. These recommendations can impact upon, among other things, the environment, open space and traffic management.
The Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnership has been awarded £35,735 to these ends, to be distributed as Community Grants to local worthy causes. This sum, however, is not as large as it seems as the Inverleith referred to is that of the Inverleith Ward. The funding therefore must be shared in the area bounded by Blackhall, the Dean Village, Warriston Crematorium and Ferry Road. Recent grants have assisted the running of the Stockbridge Village Festival and the installation of stone sculptures in Wester Drylaw Park. I encourage readers to consider applying for Community Grants to support causes within the Inverleith Conservation area (approximately bounded by East Fettes Avenue, Ferry Road, the eastern edge of Warriston Cemetery and the Water of Leith.)
If you would like to find out more about the Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnership, Elaine Lennon, Partnership Development Officer, can be contacted by email at elaine.lennon@near.org.uk, or by post at Services for Communities, North Edinburgh Local Office, 8 West Pilton Gardens, Edinburgh, EH4 4DP.
The Inverleith Society Autumn Social Evening
No report on the past year would be complete without mention of the social evening. Penelope Stuart Menteth very kindly opened her home for the very well attended evening which was enjoyed by all. Hosting these events is by no means a small task and on your behalf I should like to thank Penelope once again for having us.
