Report on the year 2003-04
by Alison Gordon
(reprinted from The Inverleith News, Summer 2004)
The Committee has met regularly, as usual, throughout the year. Monitoring of planning applications and local issues continues. In line with what we hope will become an established tradition, a social evening was held on 13 February at 28 Inverleith Terrace. We felt that the rather dreary month of February was a good time to hold it, and this was confirmed by the large number of people who attended and enjoyed a particularly carnival evening.
Our AGM in November took the form of a question and answer session, mainly related to parking and transport. We were fortunate to have Bill Campbell from LRT, Andrew Holmes, City Development Department, Alan Jackson from Trinity ward and Michael Dixon from Stockbridge ward as our panellists and a lively session followed. Of paramount interest was the extension of the Controlled Parking Zone, which is in the formal consultation phase. Many concerns were voiced, but it was generally agreed that control is necessary. In the Council all political persuasions support the plan in principle. Also of concern
was the suggestion by some that ordinary people were feeling isolated from planning processes, and communication by the Council was deteriorating.
Since our AGM the question of Congestion Charging has arisen, and the proposed boundaries have been published. This is obviously of great concern as, at the moment, Inverleith is right on the edge of the inner cordon and will inevitably suffer increased traffic flows. The Committee will be keeping a close watch on developments and doing everything possible to influence the final decisions.
The Royal Botanic Garden continues with the Gateway Project, and an update is included in this edition of Inverleith News. Alison Gordon has been designated to represent the Inverleith Society on the RBGE liaison group.
We shall also be making contact with the Inverleith Park Association, as we obviously have shared interests.
The Society committee members are all linked by email, and progress with an Inverleith Society website continues slowly.
